The Classic 4-Day Inca Trail follows the original path used by the Incas, covering approximately 46 km (29 miles) through diverse Andean landscapes. This multi-day trek combines mountain scenery, cloud forest ecosystems, and visits to significant archaeological sites along the route.
Throughout the journey, you will explore Inca ruins, observe native flora such as orchids, and camp in designated areas along the trail. The route culminates at Inti Punku (Sun Gate), where you will have your first panoramic view of Machu Picchu before descending to the citadel. This trek offers a comprehensive experience of Inca history, architecture, and natural surroundings leading to one of Peru’s most important archaeological sites.
Departure from your hotel is scheduled at approximately 6:00 a.m. as we travel to Piscacucho (2,650 m.a.s.l.), also known as Kilometer 82, the official starting point of the Classic Inca Trail. After passing the checkpoint, we begin the hike along a gradual trail that follows the Urubamba River.
After walking across relatively flat terrain, we reach the area of Miskay (2,800 m.a.s.l.) and continue toward Wayllabamba, where our first campsite is located at approximately 3,000 meters above sea level. Along the route, you will observe diverse flora and fauna, as well as scenic views of the Vilcanota (Urubamba) River valley. Across the river, the snow-capped Veronica Mountain (5,832 m.a.s.l.) can be seen dominating the landscape.
Overnight: Camping in Wayllabamba
Meals Included: Lunch and dinner prepared by the trekking cook and support team.
Maximum Height: 2171 msnm
Walking time: Full Day
After breakfast, we begin what is considered the most demanding day of the Classic Inca Trail. The trail ascends along narrow and steep paths for approximately 9 km, with a continuous uphill climb. As we gain elevation, the landscape gradually changes to higher and drier terrain with less vegetation.
We will reach the highest point of the trek at Warmiwañusca Pass (Dead Woman’s Pass), where you will have panoramic views of the surrounding Andean mountains. Along the route, it is possible to observe local bird species and native high-altitude vegetation typical of the region.
To help maintain energy levels at altitude, it is recommended to carry snacks such as sweets or chocolates. Some hikers also choose to chew coca leaves as a traditional Andean method to support acclimatization.
After crossing the pass, we will descend to the Pacaymayu Valley (3,600 m.a.s.l.), where we will camp after approximately six hours of trekking.
Overnight: Camping in Pacaymayu
Meals Included: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner prepared by the trekking cook and support team.
Maximum Height: 2171 msnm
Walking time: Full Day
This day stands out for the number of archaeological sites visited along the route. After breakfast, we continue hiking toward the Runkuracay Pass. Along the way, we visit the archaeological site of Runkuracay, a small circular structure believed to have functioned as a control point or watchtower. We then descend toward Yanacocha (Black Lagoon) before entering the cloud forest ecosystem.
The trail continues to Sayacmarca, an impressive Inca complex featuring semicircular constructions, multiple levels, narrow pathways, ceremonial fountains, courtyards, and irrigation channels. From there, we follow a gradual ascent toward the Phuyupatamarca Pass. Along this section, you will observe well-preserved Inca stonework and pass through an original Inca tunnel before reaching Phuyupatamarca, one of the most complete and best-preserved archaeological sites on the trail. The name Phuyupatamarca means “City Above the Clouds,” reflecting its elevated position.
Finally, we descend toward Wiñay Wayna, where our campsite will be located.
Overnight: Camping in Wiñay Wayna or Phuyupatamarca
Meals Included: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner prepared by the trekking cook and support team.
Maximum Height: 2650 msnm
Walking time: Full Day
We will wake up at approximately 4:00 a.m. in Wiñay Wayna to begin the final hike toward Inti Punku (Sun Gate). The walk takes about one hour, arriving in time to witness the sunrise over Machu Picchu. From Inti Punku, we descend for approximately 40 minutes to reach the Machu Picchu citadel.
Upon arrival, we will begin a guided tour of Circuit 5, lasting approximately two and a half hours, visiting the main sectors of the archaeological site. After the guided tour, you will have free time to explore Machu Picchu independently or, if you have a separate entrance ticket, climb Huayna Picchu Mountain. From there, you can enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding valleys and mountains. Access to Huayna Picchu, the Temple of the Moon, and the Inca Bridge is subject to availability and prior reservation.
In the afternoon, you will descend to Aguas Calientes, where you will have free time for lunch (not included). Later, we will board the train back to Cusco, according to train schedule availability. This concludes our services.
