The Humantay Lake hike from Cusco is a full-day high-altitude trekking experience located in the Andes Mountains of Peru. Surrounded by the snow-capped peaks of Salkantay and Humantay, this glacial lagoon sits at approximately 4,200 meters (13,779 ft) above sea level.
The lake is formed by meltwater descending from the glaciers of the Vilcabamba mountain range, creating its distinctive turquoise color. This tour combines scenic landscapes, moderate hiking, and panoramic mountain views, making it one of the most popular day trips from Cusco for travelers seeking nature and adventure.
The hike offers opportunities to observe Andean flora and fauna while experiencing the environmental conditions of high-altitude trekking in Peru.
At approximately 4:30 a.m., we will pick you up from your hotel in Cusco to begin our journey northwest of the city. We will travel through small Andean villages and rural landscapes until reaching the town of Limatambo. From there, we will ascend toward Mollepata, where we will enjoy breakfast and later return for lunch. Along the way, we will stop at the Markahuasi viewpoint to observe the archaeological remains of the same name. The guide will provide detailed information about the site before continuing the journey to Soraypampa. During the drive, the guide will also share information about the local flora, fauna, and traditional customs of the region.
Upon arrival in Soraypampa, the starting point of the hike, the guide will explain the proper way to walk at high altitude, including the duration and distance of the trek. You will receive a light snack and walking sticks to assist you during the hike, which takes approximately two hours. Once at Humantay Lake, you will have time to appreciate the scenery and the impressive views of the snow-capped Humantay and Salkantay mountains. After a short rest and time for photographs, we will descend along the same route to Soraypampa, where our vehicle will be waiting to take us back to Mollepata for a buffet lunch. After lunch, we will return to Cusco.
